12 years of blogging – what I’ve learned
12 years ago, I started blogging on alwa.info, and since then, I’ve expanded to Medium, Substack, and other platforms.
Writing has become more than a hobby for me—it’s a way of life.
Blogging is incredible, but it can be challenging to keep up with the habit and consistently create content that resonates with an audience beyond yourself.
Here are some key lessons I’ve learned over the past 12 years, and I hope they’ll inspire and guide you on your own journey:
Writing is Daily Self-Improvement
Reading gives you around 60% of the understanding, but writing requires a deeper comprehension. Each piece you write is a step toward bettering yourself.
Stick to a Schedule
Set a writing schedule and commit to it. Focus on the value your content will bring, rather than who will read it. Over time, the audience will come if you provide valuable insights.
Just Show Up, No Matter What
Cultivating a writing habit takes time. In my early days, I’d take my laptop to the library or a coffee shop—the environment motivated me to get words on the page.
When I was in Nanjing, it was Nanjing Library near Presidential Palace
When I was in Seattle, it was a random coffee shop in downtown
When I am in Bay area, it is the Central Park Library
Don’t Underestimate Your Knowledge
Even if you think what you know is basic, there’s always someone who can learn from it. Sharing your experiences can benefit others, no matter where they are on their journey.
Writing Has a Compounding Effect
The more you write, the easier it becomes to connect ideas and themes. Over time, your content gains depth and perspective.
Embrace Different Opinions
Not everyone will agree with you, and that’s okay. Every comment is an opportunity to see things from another perspective. Even those who point out minor typos are helping you improve.
Give First, Capture Value Later
Offer your insights freely. By focusing on giving, you build trust and authority. The rewards will follow with time.
Accessibility is Essential
Making your content accessible is a skill that requires practice. It’s important to ensure your ideas are clear and understandable to a wide audience.
Have an Opinion
Even in tech writing, opinions matter. Articulate your perspective, and don’t shy away from expressing your unique take on solutions.
